Accounting Associate – Accounts Receivable

Berman Hebrew Academy is seeking a full-time Accounting Associate – Accounts Receivable, reporting to the Finance Director.  Once the incumbent has proven mastery of the duties of this position, there may be the potential to take on more responsibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Accounts Receivable:

  • Maintain accounts receivable database and add/update billing accounts.

  • Add fees and discounts based on contracts and forms submitted, reviewing accounts to ensure accuracy.

  • Record and allocate payments and credits with attention to detail.

  • Communicate with clients in a professional manner that conveys respect and sensitivity.

  • Complete account updates and requests.  Respond to inquiries promptly with a high level of customer service.  Follow up as needed in a timely manner.

  • Make bank deposits remotely.

  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports.

  • Review and reconcile balances with source documentation.

  • Review payment plans and adjust accounts as necessary.

  • Maintain gift card inventory and sales records.

Finance:

  • Assist the Finance Director with special projects as necessary.

  • Prepare account reconciliations and other account analyses in Excel.

  • Prepare analysis of accounts to ensure accurate posting and proper classification.

  • Provide grant support.

  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED)

  • Some college (Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field preferred)

  • At least two years of Accounts Receivable experience

  • At least two years of other Accounting experience

  • Must be vaccinated for Covid-19 (or willing to begin the vaccination process), which is a requirement for all employees.

  • Must be willing to work in person in a currently masked work environment.

  • Detail-oriented with strong reconciliation skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and thrive in a fast-paced office environment.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, integrity, and discretion with sensitive information.

  • Ability to communicate with clients in a respectful and professional manner.

OTHER PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced MS Excel skills preferred.

  • Experience with Blackbaud and/or other billing/payables software a plus.

  • Ability to anticipate needs and solve problems by being proactive and resourceful.

  • Understanding of the accounting cycle.

  • Willingness to learn and grow by taking on new projects and assignments.

  • Commitment to customer service and responsiveness.

  • Experience conducting business in a paperless environment (e.g., electronic documents and files).

ABOUT BERMAN HEBREW ACADEMY

The Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy, referred to locally as Berman or The Academy, is a coed Modern Orthodox Jewish day school serving the greater Washington area. The school was founded in 1944, and moved to its current location in Rockville, Maryland (site of the former Robert E. Peary High School) in 1999.  At that time, the school changed its name from the Hebrew Academy of Greater Washington to its current name, which reflects the school’s benefactor, Melvin J. Berman.  The student body consists of roughly 670 students, and grades range from Pre-K to 12.  Berman has a dual curriculum which includes secular subjects and Judaics, and the school day is generally split to cover both curricula. Berman also hosts two synagogues and Sulam, a special needs school serving the Jewish community.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The salary range for this position is $45,000 – $55,000, depending on experience.  Benefits include 403(b) retirement plan; health, dental, and vision insurance; Health Savings Account (HSA); Flexible Spending Accounts for health and dependent care; life insurance; paid vacation; a generous paid holiday schedule; and free parking.
