Meet our Honorees

Deb and Dave Sloan
Guests of Honor

Deb and Dave Sloan have been volunteers in the Greater Washington Jewish community for several decades. Both originally from Philadelphia, they made the trek to Kesher Israel and Washington, DC for college, marriage, and law school. While living downtown, they welcomed Rami (’19), Penina (’23), Gaby (’23), and Rafi (’24) into the world. After almost two decades downtown, they migrated north to Kemp Mill in 2010, where they are active members of Kemp Mill Synagogue (KMS).

Deb has dedicated her legal career to public health and currently serves as Assistant Deputy Chief Counsel for Drugs at the Food and Drug Administration. Dave is a Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft, advising governments around the world on digital transformation.

Deb has served in many volunteer roles at KMS, including as VP for Kehilah and most recently as VP for Youth Programming. Dave has been privileged to serve on the Berman Hebrew Academy board for 12 years, including three years as President, where he was perhaps best known for navigating the school through the beginning of the covid pandemic. Over the years, Dave has worked to advance STEM education at Berman, helping to launch Hour of Code in the Lower School and now, with Deb, sponsoring the Aaron Chasan z”l Innovation Lab in the Upper School. Dave also volunteers for the chevra kadisha, where he receives far fewer complaints.

Deb and Dave are both very grateful to the faculty, staff, and administrators at Berman for helping to educate and guide the Sloan children to become committed Jews, curious learners, and generally  fine human beings (with only minor exceptions).

Shana Siesser
Community Service Award

Shana Siesser is the proud mother of 4 Berman students, Yael, Kelilah, Gidony, and Kiki and the lucky wife of esteemed Berman alumnus and upper school minyan attendee, Daniel Siesser.

Originally from Miami, Florida, Shana has been living in the DMV since 2004. She met Daniel at Kesher Israel, by way of fellow honorees, Dave and Deb Sloan. They eventually made their way to the suburbs for a better life and to be close to school for their kids.

By day, Shana works as an attorney for the US Department of Veterans A airs and by night, she volunteers for the school, shul, and pool and runs a small Judaica resin art business.

She enjoys active Whatsapp groups, managing logistics, utilitarian social media requests, and enthusiastically supporting hardworking teachers.

She has been active in the PTO since 2014 and president since 2016. Shana has been fortunate to work with so many devoted and creative parents during her tenure and looks forward to continuing her involvement with her successor at the helm.
