Director of Performing Arts (K-12)

Berman Hebrew Academy is a Modern Orthodox Jewish day school that provides a comprehensive Jewish and secular education in an atmosphere of reverence, good citizenship, and love of the Jewish people and Israel. Adhering to standards of academic excellence and exemplary moral conduct, it provides opportunities for each student to achieve the maximum of his or her potential, engaged with and contributing to both the Jewish community and the society at large.

The Director of Performing Arts (K – 12) will oversee all aspects of our Performing Arts Program. The Director will also manage all administrative aspects of the program and instruct classes, as deemed necessary. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Communicate regularly with the Senior Administrative team regarding all aspects of the performing arts program.
  • Train, coach, and mentor performing arts teachers with curriculum design, lesson plans, and collaborative projects.
  • Recruit and assist in the hiring of performing arts teachers.
  • Collaborate with PreK-12 teachers to ensure integration with other subjects for specific units of study and/or grade level performances.
  • Manage the operation of the Performing Arts department and ensure budgets are effectively managed.
  • Develop a schoolwide vision for Performing Arts – including band, orchestra, choral music, theater, dance, film, and emerging disciplines.
  • Design and manage an aligned Performing Arts program strategy for schedules, spaces, capital equipment (acquisition, maintenance, replacement), and personnel–including full & part-time faculty.
  • Lead and support the Performing Arts faculty and collaborate with faculty in curricular and extracurricular programming.
  • Collaborate with Business Office to determine finance needs, including faculty salaries
  • Determine and allocate space needs for classes, rehearsals, and performances.  
  • Approve hiring, supervision and evaluation of part-time personnel including annual observations. 
  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing and Communications to develop and implement internal and external communications including print design, and web presence for performing arts events and initiatives.

Classroom Responsibilities

  • Create and teach a comprehensive and innovative music & drama program.
  • Prepare and execute thoughtful units of study designed to reach the multiple learning styles of students.
  • Maintain a safe and engaging learning environment.
  • Consistently and clearly communicate with colleagues, administrators, and parents.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Direct Upper School and Middle School Shows.
  • Attend faculty meetings.
  • Actively participate in all in-service and orientation days.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by administration.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty to the satisfaction of the Head of School. This is a full-time position. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three plus years of experience managing a performing arts team, preferably in an independent school setting.
  • Advanced degree in Theater Education, Theater and/or Music, Music Education.
  • Proven experience directing theatrical performances.
  • Experience adapting children’s literature and scripts and/or writing plays for students.
  • Familiarity with Jewish/Israeli music preferred. 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to walk for long periods of time around campus 
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Ability to sit at a desk working on a computer
