Finance Director

Berman Hebrew Academy is a Modern Orthodox Co-Educational Day School that provides a comprehensive Jewish and secular education in an atmosphere of reverence, good citizenship, and love of the Jewish people and Israel.

It provides opportunities for each student to achieve the maximum of his or her potential, engaged with, and contributing to both the Jewish community and the society at large.

The Finance Director will report to the Executive Director and will directly supervise and evaluate employees responsible for Personnel, Accounting functions and Financial aid administration.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Budget
    • Prepare the annual operating budget in detail.
    • Meet with administrators to build the budget initially and review as needed.
    • Update budget info sheets to administrators monthly.
    • Assist in the building campaign budget.
    • Prepare and track special project budgeting.
    • Prepare reports as requested in detail 
  • Payroll/Benefits
    • Track all salaries and adjustments as they relate to budget.
    • Prepare/Oversee contract preparation, distribution and changes.
    • Submit and approve payroll revisions.
    • Review semi-monthly payroll.
    • Review and negotiate annual employee benefit plans.
    • Make recommendations and oversee follow through on employee benefits package.
  • Student Accounts/Cash receipts
    • Manage and organize the school student billing database.
    • Prepare annual tuition billing.
    • Print and review tuition statements.
    • Review payment contracts with parents.
    • Oversee receivable collections and discuss overdue payment issues with parents as well as follow-up collection calls and letters.
    • Scholarship discussions with chairperson re: special cases; write assessment and follow-up letters to scholarship parents.
    • Oversee deposits for appropriate accounting including endowment, building fund, tuition, scrip, fundraising, catering, restricted class accounts, etc.
  • Accounts Payable
    • Approve purchase orders as they compare to budget.
    • Approve check requests as they compare to budget.
    • Match and code PO’s to invoices.
    • Review open aging, select vendors for payment.
    • Petty cash distribution.
  • Financial Statements
    • Oversee annual audit and tax return preparation.
    • Review monthly financials in detail.
    • Cash flow management.
    • Submit and review monthly journal entries.
    • Project year-end figures.
    • Research info on accounts as requested.
  • Misc.
    • Manage financial and physical resources.
    • Responsible for compliance with IRS guidelines regarding tax exempt status, as well as internal accounting policies and procedures manual.
    • Ensure staff and Board of Directors have sufficient and up-to–date information.
    • Work with relevant committees and attend their meetings i.e.: Budget and Finance, Endowment, Board of Directors.
    • Negotiate annual Liability, Auto and Worker’s Compensation insurance package.
    • Any other projects or tasks that may arise relating to business operations.
  • Skills Required
    • Strong accounting/financial background including experience with audits and budgeting.
    • Familiarity with financial management software such as Financial Edge and Microsoft Suite.
    • Ability to multitask and manage a team of employees.
    • Ability to develop strong, positive interpersonal relationships and work productively as part of a larger team.
