Part-Time Robotics Coach (Upper and Middle School)

We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Part-Time Robotics Coach to join our team and inspire students at the high school and middle school level in the exciting field of robotics. This position is perfect for college students who possess a passion for robotics and enjoy working with children. While expertise in the field is not required, familiarity with coding basics and robotics platforms is necessary to effectively mentor students.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach and mentor students in the fundamentals of robotics, emphasizing hands-on learning and problem-solving skills.
  • Instruct students in coding languages, including Java, JavaScript, Python, block-based programming, and C/C++.
  • Facilitate the exploration of the Vex Robotics platform, including the Vex competition, providing guidance and training on robot design, construction, and programming.
  • Familiarize students with the Lego Robotics platform, focusing on robot building, programming, and participation in competitions.
  • Introduce students to the First Robotics Competition, guiding them through the various stages of robot development, programming, and teamwork.
  • Conduct weekly hour-long practice sessions, providing instruction, guidance, and hands-on support to students.
  • Increase practice sessions closer to competition and tournament dates, ensuring students have ample preparation time.
  • Attend and supervise students at tournaments and exhibitions, ensuring they adhere to competition rules and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the school administration, other coaches, and mentors to ensure the smooth functioning of the robotics program.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive environment where students can learn, experiment, and collaborate effectively.
  • Provide guidance and support during team meetings, practices, and competitions, ensuring safety protocols are followed.
  • Motivate and encourage students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
  • Assist in organizing and coordinating robotics events, including local tournaments and exhibitions.
  • Maintain open communication with parents/guardians regarding students’ progress, achievements, and upcoming events.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance coaching skills and stay updated on the latest advancements in robotics.

Requirements:

  • Passion for robotics and a desire to inspire and educate students.
  • Familiarity with coding languages, such as Java, JavaScript, Python, block-based programming, and C/C++.
  • Knowledge of the Vex Robotics platform and the Vex competition, as well as the Lego Robotics platform and the First Robotics Competition.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, and school staff.
  • Patience and the ability to provide guidance and support to students with varying levels of robotics experience.
  • Ability to create a positive and inclusive learning environment for students.
  • Flexibility in scheduling, as practices may need to double in duration closer to competition and tournament dates.
  • Availability to attend tournaments and exhibitions on weekends or as required.
  • Prior experience working with children or coaching/mentoring is preferred but not required.
  • Willingness to undergo training and professional development as needed.
